A Fantasy film selection

It's been an interesting weekend...

This morning we were woken by thunder rolling down the street interspersed with heavy rain pounding at the window.  I kept my eyes closed through most of it until there was a loud crash from downstairs.  My husband went to investigate and returned saying, 'it's like Jurassic Park down there.  The fences are down and they're out!'

He meant the guinea pigs.  One of the fences surrounding their enclosure keeps breaking and at some point, the fence must have fallen down (or was pushed) and the two piggys behind it escaped.  Thankfully when they escape they go straight under the sofa.  Unfortunately, they went behind the sofa and somehow dislodged the ironing board - that was the loud crash.
Both piggys are completely unhurt; one was very, very scared (the follower who's scared of his own shadow) and the other (the mastermind) was easy to catch using a bit of red pepper.

Yesterday, we went to the Bristol Balloon Fiesta.  The previous two years we have gotten stuck in traffic queues and given up, but this year we made it in.  We spent £10 to park.  £10!  It was basically a giant funfair with stalls and everything was massively overpriced.  We walked around for 2 hours, had a sit down, a couple of drinks, looked at the prices of things with mouths gaping and then climbed the mountain back to the car and went home, slightly poorer and very sunburnt but happy for the day out.

On Friday, I went shopping.  I love having Friday's off work.
A certain music/DVD/games shop does a great piece of marketing by grouping films; funny films, scary films, action films, kids films.  Here is a Fantasy film selection that I found:

(Robin Hood/Beowulf/Merlin, Jumanji, Peter Pan, The Goonies, The Dark Crystal, The Neverending Story, Hook/Jumanji/Zuthura, Land of the Lost, Clash of the Titans, King Kong, Jason and the Argonauts, Mysterious Islands, Your Highness/Year One/Land of the Lost, Nanny McPhee/Peter Pan/Jumanji/Thunderbirds(?), Mad Max, The MummyL Tomb of the Dragon King, The Mummy Trilogy, and Sinbad collection)

Honestly?  I felt a little disappointed.  There are a lot of old classics (from when I was so young they are only a vague memory), a few new, rubbish films and a lot of Jumanji.
So I started thinking of fantasy films that were missing;

  • Labyrinth
  • Hocus Pocus
  • Ghostbusters
  • The Lost Boys
  • Edward Scissorhands
  • Beetlejuice
  • Dog Soldiers

Even if we limit this to child friendly fantasy films - where the hell is Labyrinth?  I grew up on David Bowie's goblin king and Bette Midler's witch and her sisters, with Billy Murray and Dan Akyroyd fighting huge marshmellow men (mother puss bucket!), of the cheeky and dark Beetlejuice and the classic Lost Boys.

What films do you think are missing?
